Welcome to Self-Publishing for the Broke Author, where I’m updating my 2018 book of the same title and posting the revised chapters as I go, along with additional tips and guidance to help you produce, publish and sell books like a pro, all without going broke in the process. Subscribe for free to get it all delivered to your inbox.
I’m working on the second chapter of my Broke Author book update, all about formatting and book design. I’d wanted to have it ready to post here today, but it turns out that the available tools have gotten so much better since I published the first edition that I’m having to rewrite this section from scratch. I may end up restructuring it into two separate chapters. At any rate, it’s a long way from ready.
But I don’t want to leave you hanging this week. I recently discovered a fantastic resource for helping you up your DIY book cover game, as well as graphics for your book marketing campaigns and social media.
Here’s her playlist of book cover tutorials. I’ve been making my own book covers for 15 years and I still learned a few things that will help me elevate my own covers. So definitely check her out.
As I discussed last week, a professional-looking, genre-specific cover is essential for hooking a reader’s attention and enticing them to click through to your book page. If you missed it, I also discussed how, once there, your book’s blurb and sample do most of the work of selling your book.
If you missed that, then you probably also missed my giveaway offer — I’m giving two random winners their choice of either a rewrite of their blurb or a critique and edit of their sample — i.e. the first 10 pages of their book. To enter, make sure you’re subscribed to this publication, and then head to last week’s post and leave a comment telling me you wish to enter.
I’ll be drawing the winners at random from the comments on that post (remember, you’ve got to be subscribed to be eligible) at the end of June.
And hopefully, I’ll be back here next week with that brand new second chapter of Self-Publishing for the Broke Author.
See you then!
Thanks for reading! If you’re in need of a budget-friendly editor, look no further. I offer editing and proofreading services at affordable rates and I’m happy to do partial critiques and edits and work with you at a pace that suits your available budget.
If you enjoyed this free post or found it helpful, a like, comment, restack or share will go a long way towards boosting its visibility for others to find, as well as keeping the author motivated. And if you’re not actually broke, you could also consider buying me a coffee.
